Abstract | This talk presents recent developments in micromechatronics and advanced actuation technologies at the Laboratory of Integrated Actuators (LAI), EPFL Switzerland, with a focus on the design and integration of actuator systems into real-world applications. It begins with recent advances in shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators, which have been designed for improved linearity and fast response. The discussion then turns to soft and compliant dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) developed within the Center for Artificial Muscles (CAM), where the objective is to replicate the behavior of biological muscles for use in robotics, prosthetics, and wearable technologies. Finally, the talk presents an intelligent offloading footwear system designed for diabetic patients, which combines pressure sensing, actuation, and real-time control to prevent the formation of foot ulcers. Together, these projects show how innovations in micromechatronics can extend from fundamental research to impactful healthcare and assistive applications. |
