| Abstract | Cable-Driven Robots (CDRs) represent a class of mechanism in which the actuating forces are transmitted through cables rather than on-board motors. This feature potentially provides advantages such as large workspace, high payload-to-weight ratio, low inertia and high dynamic performance, which lead to applications in large-scale applications such as construction, logistics or additive manufacturing. In addition, the flexible cables can be used with soft materials to create various novel mechanisms, such as continuum or inflatable CDRs. However, the unilateral actuation in cables creates challenging problems in the analysis of the CDRs, including design, dynamics, control and workspace analysis. This lecture will introduce selected research work from the C3 Robotics Laboratory led by Prof. Darwin Lau, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Some novel types of CDRs for different applications with their associated theoretical work will be demonstrated, including reconfigurable thrustered CDPRs (RT-CDPRs), dual-stage CDPR with soft backbone for large-scale bored pile airlifting, extremely deformable CDPRs, cable-driven continuum robots and inflatable cable-driven robots. |
